  • “This type of simple, Scripturally-rooted, and liturgically-centered music belongs in every parish that believes that beauty is "not mere decoration, but rather an essential element of the liturgical action, since it is an attribute of God himself and his revelation" (Sacramentum Caritatis). Prior to hearing this both/and mix of tradition and modernity, chant and hymn, liturgy and devotion, I thought that the music of the Church consisted only of Gregorian chant, a few traditional hymns, and a modern canon of hymns that serves more devotional than liturgical purposes. The music of the Dominican Liturgical Center shows that we can embrace the beauty of tradition without limiting ourselves to only Gregorian chant and a few hymns. Most importantly for me, as a non-musically trained lay-person, this music is easy to sing and easy to pray with. Eva | Ave continues in this Polish Dominican liturgical music tradition of dynamic, simple, and beautiful music with a welcomed additional focus on music to celebrate Our Lady's feast days.   • “Chcąc podzielić się moimi wrażeniami z Warsztatów długo szukałam klucza, który pomógłby mi przekazać moje odczucia. Czas wydaje mi się tym, który najbardziej odpowiada muzyce: dziejącej się w nim i dzielącej go momenty ciszy i dźwięku. Tak więc na początku była strona internetowa i plakaty. Starannie przemyślane i ciekawe pod względem graficznym, później do nich dostosowane były materiały, które otrzymywaliśmy jako uczestnicy (identyfikatory, okładka śpiewnika, nawet wizytówki na drzwiach sal, w których odbywały się zajęcia). Informacja pojawiła się na tyle wcześnie, że nie było problemów z zapisaniem się na warsztaty i umieszczeniem tego wydarzenia w swoim kalendarzu. Potem była recepcja a w niej przyjaźnie nastawieni wolontariusze. O dziwo, ich stosunek do uczestników nie zmieniał się w ciągu trwania warsztatów, pomimo tego, że ich zmęczenie w widoczny sposób narastało. Zasadnicza część spotkania rozpoczęła się od modlitwy - zaśpiewaliśmy jutrznię, którą poprowadził jako kantor Marcin Bornus-Szczyciński. Ten rys modlitwy i osadzenia warsztatów w kontekście Adwentu (według mnie bardzo cenny) był obecny do samego końca. Kolejne dwa dni to cudownie ciężka praca. Mogę napisać jedynie o sekcji chorału, w której spotkaniach brałam udział. Prowadzącym był Marcin Bornus-Szczyciński, człowiek posiadający olbrzymią wiedzę na temat zasad wykonywania chorału i dar otwierania głosu - nie wiem, czy jest ktoś, kto przy nim boi się śpiewać. Ale nie ma ludzi bez wad - posiada on także dar wymowy, nad którym nie zawsze panuje, co dla naszej sekcji skończyło się przewagą teorii nad praktyką. Szkoda. Kolejną dobrą stroną pracy w tej sekcji było jej zróżnicowanie pod względem poziomu znajomości chorału. Ci, którzy przyszli po raz pierwszy mieli szansę uczyć się tej formy śpiewu od wcześniej już "uczonych w Piśmie". Jest to naturalna droga przyswajania sobie znajomości tego sposobu modlitwy (tym przecież przede wszystkim jest śpiew chorałowy) i pozwala na odkrycie swojej własnej "melodii" w harmonii chóru. Nie da się także ukryć, że te warsztaty były zaledwie początkiem jej szukania. Konkretnym owocem naszej pracy było nocne czuwanie mające formę celebracji liturgicznej (głównym celebransem był o. Grzegorz) o wyraźnie wyodrębnionych dwóch częściach. Znakiem podziału było miejsce, w którym znajdowała się ikona Maryi. Pierwsza z części odbywała się w nawach kościoła (ikonę uroczyście wprowadzono i ustawiono na ołtarzu) i składała się z utworów polifonicznych. Chór prowadziło czterech dyrygentów, co dawało możliwość zauważenia jak wiele zależy od osobowości osoby dyrygującej i także, jak aranżują muzykę poszczególni prowadzący. Ta część trwała dwie godziny i pod koniec dało już się słyszeć zmęczenie głosów, szczególnie wysokich. Druga część rozpoczęła się przeniesieniem ikony na ołtarz tzw. "przedsoborowy" w głębi prezbiterium. Był to początek celebracji Godziny Czytań. Oczywiście była to część wypełniona chorałem. Trwała ok. godziny i złożyły się na nią psalmy, kantyki i śpiewane czytania. Został odśpiewany fragment Ewangelii i brat Tomasz Grabowski powiedział krótkie kazanie. Oprócz tego, że podprowadziło ono nas duchowo pod końcowy hymn, to jeszcze pozwoliło odpocząć głosom i końcowe "Te Deum" zabrzmiało rzeczywiście jak pieśń triumfalna. Dodatkowy efekt dało echo rodzące się w pustym już wtedy kościele - przez chwilę mogliśmy się poczuć (tak modlitwę w chórze interpretowała teologia średniowieczna) brakującą od upadku szatana częścią chórów anielskich. Niedzielne przedpołudnie było już tylko powolnym wychodzeniem z klimatu warsztatów. Złożyły się na nie spotkania poświęcone teorii, jedyną grupą pracującą jeszcze z głosem byli ćwiczący emisję. Wszystko zakończyła Eucharystia. To był dobry finał tego trzydniowego koncertu, gdyż stanowił przypomnienie celu naszego spotkania a jednocześnie dał umocnienie do korzystania z jego owoców tam, gdzie zostaliśmy posłani. Teraz pozostało nam wykorzystać to, co dały nam warsztaty i czekać na szansę kolejnego spotkania.”

  • “Komentarz organizatorów pojawił się już, zatem pora na wypowiedź uczestnika... Bardzo się cieszę, że mogłam wziąć udział w warsztatach liturgicznych. Niestety, nie udało mi się to w okresie Wielkiego Postu, dlatego też z nadzieją czekałam na kolejną tego rodzaju inicjatywę. Doczekałam się i rozczarowana nie jestem. Uważam, że te trzy dni spędzone w dominikańskim klasztorze, w którego murach rozbrzmiewały pieśni maryjne, były czasem dobrze wykorzystanym i owocnym, dostarczającym przeżyć nie tylko estetycznych, ale i duchowych. Nie trudno mi pokazać te części programu warsztatów, które dla mnie osobiście były najważniejsze. Od śpiewu zacznę. Prawdziwą przyjemnością była dla mnie praca w chórze kierowanym przez Piotra Pałkę, choć przyznać trzeba, że natężony program wymagał od wszystkich uczestników wiele wysiłku. Myślę jednak, że sił, jakie włożyliśmy w tę pracę nikt nie żałował, bo nie da się zaprzeczyć, że warto było. To, czego nauczyliśmy się w ciągu dwóch dni, mogliśmy potem zaśpiewać na sobotnim czuwaniu i tym sposobem nasza praca przerodziła się w modlitwę. I punkt drugi - tym razem SŁOWO. Jednym z ważniejszych dla mnie wydarzeń podczas tych warsztatów były konferencje o. Tomasza Kwietnia OP. To opowiadanie o poszczególnych częściach Mszy świętej, analizowanie kolejnych fragmentów liturgii wzbogacone cennym komentarzem, pozwoliło mi w nowym świetle zobaczyć swoją wobec niej postawę i skłoniło do refleksji. Myślę, że wielu uczestnikom warsztatów słowa o. Kwietnia pomogły dotrzeć do najbardziej oczywistych prawd, które tak często w życiu nam umykają i które, przez "przyzwyczajenie" do uczestnictwa we Mszy Świętej, zaczynamy bagatelizować. Po części pochwał pora na krytykę. Elementem, który mnie rozczarował podczas warsztatów, była organizacja zajęć poświęconych dykcji. Myślę, że półgodzinne wystąpienie pana Jurasa nie spełniło oczekiwań uczestników, ponieważ w tak krótkim czasie mogliśmy usłyszeć jedynie rzeczy, o których wcześniej mówili już prowadzący zajęcia w sekcjach i chórach. Zabrakło czasu na praktykę, tymczasem większość śpiewających liczyła na takie ćwiczenia. Wydaje mi się, że w przypadku tego punktu programu, organizatorzy mogli zdecydować się na przeprowadzenie ich równocześnie ze wszystkimi grupami, ale za to w większym wymiarze czasowym. Uważam, że warsztaty były przedsięwzięciem naprawdę udanym i potrzebnym. Myślę, że przed kolejną tego typu inicjatywą należałoby się postarać o skuteczną jej reklamę na terenie całej Polski. Warto bowiem, aby oprócz osób w jakiś sposób związanych ze środowiskiem dominikańskim, dla których to, czego uczyliśmy się podczas zajęć, było bliskie, znaleźli się także inni ludzie, którzy chcieliby coś zrobić, aby liturgia w ich kościołach była piękniejsza i bogatsza. Niewątpliwie warsztaty taką szansę stwarzają i mam nadzieję, że kolejne ich edycje będą wzbudzać coraz większe zainteresowanie. Ja osobiście serdecznie na nie zapraszam.”

  • “This music taught me to love singing at mass, and more importantly, it taught me to love the mass as a divine song of sacrifice and praise. I’m a convert, and to me “music at mass” always just meant “music that we sang in my Protestant churches”: 19th-century hymns, pop-folk from the ‘70s and ‘80s, or praise choruses from the ‘90s. When I first encountered this Polish Dominican music as a grad student, I was completely blown away: here was music that sounded totally different from anything I’d heard before, in church or on the radio, but was at the same time totally intuitive; here was music that a handful of amateurs could pick up and learn in five minutes, and somehow turn into captivating beauty; here was music that was drew me in, that actually made me want to sing it. And the more I sang it, the more I realized I was singing the mass. Singing this music taught me what the mass was, and taught me to love it. I’ve been a Dominican now for more than a decade and a priest for almost five years, and I cannot possibly express my gratitude to God for how he formed my love of his liturgy through music like this.
